Residensilk- MONTE BARRO is part of an international artist residency network called: Residensilk, welcoming Interdisciplinary Artists, Musicians, Dancers, Architects, Photographers, Video and Media Artists, Writers, Visual and conceptual artists from all over the world.
Residensilk supports multicultural dialogue and interdisciplinary exchange between international artists and local traditions in a rural dimension that offers artistic time in solitude and exchanges between peers. Sited in a remote location, Residensilk-MonteBarro isolated beauty is the ideal environment for intellectual work and creates optimal conditions for concentration and creativity, international exchange, friendship, and mutual understanding.
Nature, Art & Habitat Residency, an ECO-laboratory of multidisciplinary practice, located in Monte Barro, Italy, is a flexible program that aims to unfold and display a sensitive type of culture that relates to nature as a source of inspiration and a measure of available resources. The ultimate goal of Residensilk-MonteBarro is to unveil intimate links among all living organisms for more resilient development in which humans and nature are shown to coexist. Recycling, Efficiency, and Sustainability are the main themes of this residency.
At the outset of the Anthropocene and in consideration of current pressing climatic threats, the Residensilk-MonteBarro program seeks to push toward a deep rethinking of the environment and its functions, by challenging creative and critical minds alike to produce innovative interpretations of nature as a resilient but fragile resource and space. We hope to receive proposals from across the disciplines, and we anticipate that projects will work toward deepening awareness of how humans can engage responsibly in shaping the future of our natural spheres.

Two studio spaces (10 and 55 m2) are available – equipped with desks or workbenches, shelves and seating.

One conference room (50 m2) is available for talks, screenings, and classes.

One Dance-Performance space (100 m1) is available for individual or group practices. Equipped with a video projector and speakers. You need to book it prior to your trip.

One basic darkroom is available for photographers

A lot of private, isolated, mysterious corners available for writers and artist who are looking for peace and contemplation spot!

Shared room 600 €
Includes: Transfer from the airport or train station, Milan selected museums tour, access to all the facilities at the hostel: Kitchens, studios, working spaces, gallery, etc. Monte Barro eco-park tour. Studio visit with local artists per request of the residents.

Meals +100 € (Including three main meals and snacks)

A large and equipped kitchen is available for individuals who are interested to cook themselves.

Since the stores are down the mountain (1-hour walk). We can buy ingredients for you two times a week.

There is a restaurant/bar at the hostel for breakfast, launch, and dinner.
You wouldn't need to go to the city because you'll fall in love with nature! but if you want to go down the mountain there are shuttles if you book in advance.
Also, you can request the Lecco tour and Local organic food market and city transfers at the hostel.
Grants and funds
*Since we are an independent, not-for-profit, artist-run project; currently we are not able to fund the artists, although we have 1 full funded position each round for renowned artists who are interested to participate and hold workshops or exhibitions as well as emerging artists who can develop an idea at the residency. The winner of the grant will be announced at the same time as the other applicants.

Expectations towards the artist
We see the residency as a communal experience, and you are expected to share knowledge with other artists and residency hosts. We would also like you to give an informal presentation of your artistic practice. End-of-residency exhibitions or shows are welcome – but not obligatory.

Selection process
We generally favor projects with relevance to the local context. Our committee will announce its selection in late December.

LOCATION
Between the green landscapes of the Brianza,
its surrounding lakes and the Alps,
lies the new center for the ecological living:
The Parco Monte Barro Hostel.
The Parco Monte Barro Hostel is located next to the Hermitage of Monte Barro. Its central position in the park (at 750 meters above sea level, with sweeping views over the Brianza lakes and the eastern branch of Lake Como) and its proximity to some areas of cultural interest make the Hermitage a perfect venue for accommodation, excursions, educational activities, and conferences. As well as running thehostel, Legambiente and Eliante organize environmental education activities aimed at schools and groups of adults.
The hostel has a total capacity of 50 beds and it is divided into two sections: the Orchid area has rooms with up to four beds, all equipped with their own bathroom; the Squirrel section has two, three, four and ten bedrooms/bed dorms with shared bathrooms. Both areas have fully equipped kitchens, common rooms to relax and dining rooms ideal for self-catering.
